Notable mortgage industry additions and promotions, Jan. 1–10

Freddie Mac has appointed James Whitlinger as executive vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) as of Jan. 1. Whitlinger previously served as the company’s senior vice president and single-family CFO since 2014. He has served as interim CFO since June of 2024, following the departure of Christian Lown, who served as CFO from June of 2020 to June 2024.

In other news from Freddie Mac, Jane E. Prokop, Ph.D. has been elected to its board of directors, effective Jan. 2. Prokop has spent nearly 30 years in the financial services sector, working in areas such as fintech, product development and business financing. She is currently executive vice president and global head of small and medium enterprises at Mastercard Incorporated.

Freddie Mac also hired Craig Phillips as executive vice president for corporate strategy and external affairs, effective Jan. 14. In this role, Phillips will work with the CEO, president and the entire senior leadership team to support the company’s strategy. He also will oversee the company’s external affairs efforts, which include industry engagement, regulatory and conservatorship affairs and initiatives, corporate communications, marketing and public relations. 

The National Association of Realtors has hired Sherry Chris as an independent consultant and special adviser to CEO Nykia Wright. Chris will provide strategic counsel on strengthening relationships, building trust and enhancing collaboration with brokerage leaders. Chris is an 18-year veteran of Anywhere Real Estate Inc., where she most recently served as executive adviser. Previously, she was the CEO of Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate and ERA Real Estate and earlier as chief operating officer for Coldwell Banker Real Estate.

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) has promoted Jamie Woodwell to senior vice president of commercial/multifamily policy and strategic industry engagement. Woodwell, a 20-year veteran of the MBA, will oversee the association’s public policy and member engagement efforts across all commercial real estate finance sectors, collaborating closely with member leaders and staff to advance MBA members’ business and policy objectives.

Dark Matter Technologies has tapped Brad Vasto for its new chief revenue officer (CRO), a position he will assume in April. Vasto steps into the role as Sean Dugan, the outgoing CRO, prepares to succeed current CEO Rich Gagliano. Vasto has more than 30 years of experience in mortgage technology sales and lending. He previously served as senior vice president and managing director at Black Knight. After Black Knight’s acquisition, he helped transition the organization at Intercontinental Exchange before joining Assurity as senior vice president of sales.

Greystone & Co. has named Chip Hudson and Greg Lyss co-chief operating officers. Hudson previously served as CEO of Greystone’s agency lending platform, and Lyss was chief investment officer at Greystone. Together, they will oversee Greystone’s operating businesses, including its lending, servicing and asset management platforms, in addition to the company’s technology operation. Charlie Baxter, a 20-veteran of Greystone, has assumed the role of CEO for Greystone’s agency lending platform, a critical touchpoint for the firm’s continued and successful collaboration with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

The National Housing Conference (NHC) has appointment Britt Van as its new senior policy director. Van brings a wealth of experience in policy development and strategic leadership, having served as a senior adviser to the president of Ginnie Mae and the policy director for the New Democrat Coalition in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) welcomes Edwin Acevedo as its 2025 president-elect. The association also appointed Olivia Chavez and Magda Esola to the national board of directors. As leaders of the nation’s largest Hispanic professional organization, they will help guide NAHREP’s 100 chapters and over 40,000 members on the latest industry trends, professional development and leading business practices.
